Stoudemire beats Yao out for top rookie honor

Wow, this is somewhat surprising to me. Considering all the publicity that Yao got and the fact that his numbers were as good as any other rookie in the league that he was a shoo-in for the ROY award.

Stoudemire is the first high-school draft pick to win the award.

I agree because I don't think Yao should be considered a rookie. Didn't he play pro in China. I thought Ichiro should not have won in baseball and as much as I love Matsui he shouldn't be considered either.

That is an interesting concept, but I do not know if you could apply that to baseball though. Because when you think about it are the minor leagues not considered professional baseball, after all the minor leaguers are being paid.

Yeah, Yao did play pro in China.

I think the Japanese league is a little better then most minor league teams. We should use judgement here. Future Japanese hall of Famers Ichiro and Matsui aren't really rookies.

That is somewhat debatable. Look at how many MLB washouts go over to Japan and become stars. Tuffy Rhodes of all people challenged the season home run record in Japan last year. This is a guy who hit 13 home runs in 590 at bats during his major league career.
