New Board Themes

Hi! We, the good people of ModSquad Inc., haven't had much to do around here for a while. Even the usual Wrestlemania rush was well behaved. We got bored. We started thinking of special projects just to pass the time. So we messed around in the Admin panel and figured out how to make some new board themes.

Some of these are just goofs. Some are here to satisfy our weird curiosity. Anyway, check 'em out and we hope you enjoy them!

Here's the list:
Dayton Special -- Kind of a variation of Rick's pro-Flyers annual blue color scheme that he busts out for NCAA action. Some people commented last year and this year how much they like the color scheme, so we thought this would be a fun option.
OO Alternate -- Variation on the OO Special but with more black.
Tangerine Dream -- It's orange. I'm not kidding. It's really really orange.
Admiral Piett -- A joke name based on the Imperial commander from Empire and Jedi. We were wondering what the board would look like with a stuffier font, and a lot of corporate grays and black. After a while we realized it looked like the interior of a Star Destroyer.
True Blue -- A little too "girly" blue for me. Too light. Your mileage may vary.
White Out -- It's white. Very clean lines. Kinda like what heaven winds up looking like in the movies. Except it's a message board. You get the idea.

I don't know if we can really take requests yet (or if we'll ever be able to). Getting each one of these guys right takes a while. Plus there aren't many options for the buttons that say "profile" and "Send U2U" and the rest. Gray, green and one other are pretty much it, so a lot of color schemes will wind up clashing and looking really bad because of the limited button colors.

Once we figure more out, we'll let you know. For now, enjoy!

I like the "Admiral Piett" theme a lot, actually. I don't know if I'll keep it for good, but the dreary background brings the relatively more colorful avatars to life, so I'll probably at least keep this for a while. Nice job on it, whoever did the work. "OO Alternate" wasn't bad either, although I'm so used to the OO Special that it's hard to adjust.

"Tangerine Dream," however, looks like it belongs in my 12 year-old cousins blog. Double up Ugh Ugh!

Edit: A cool thing about the "Admiral Piett" scheme is that the text right underneath the banner ad (which says, "Last Active blah blah as borntorun) changes from black to white when you have a u2u. So, for those of you who miss your messages, it might be easier to notice them in this scheme.

this one it prolly the best. though i found true blue quite soothing.

the one i think i liked the best though, except for one major problem which actually extends to most of the new themes, was OO alternative. the major problem to me was the text not being black. i find regardless of background color, black text is always easiest to read. the red text there, the blue text on dayton, grey text on white out. i think all those would work better if the text was black.

in fact, i can definitely say i'd pick OO alternative and stick with it if the text was black.

also, i think tangerine dreams was the most god awful thing to ever hit my eyes. but i also think it needed to be done.

The other cool thing about Admiral Piett I just discovered: OpTard's above post brought the only "red envelope" on the page; everything else was just black, white, and grey. Just like the girl with the red coat in Schindler's List; the only spot of color among the cold, endless, and unforgiving background of DEATH!

There's an endorsement for ya, folks. "Admiral Piett"--like posting on Schindler's List.

Thanks a lot borntorun. You know, people are supposed to LIKE these themes.

I think Admiral Piett is a brilliant scheme except one thing: I have a little trouble reading the white on light grey. My eyes are pretty good too...so I dunno. Maybe it's too late at night/early in the morning?

How can "True Blue" be considered "girly"? - Blue is a boys colour, no question about it.

Tangerine Dream must be a bad joke. It is rancid. My eyes are still bleeding after looking at it.

OO Alternative looks kinda nice, it has the familiar biscuit and cream look about it (which I like). Whether it will be able to replace OO Special in my heart is another thing.

Just out of interest, is there an easy way for the Mods to summarise the tastes in the themes we choose? Like does anyone actually use "XMB Halloween", and the other weird themes? Some piecharts and graphs to illustrate the preferences would be nice.

Here are the stats. Keep in mind that these are very incomplete. The numbers don't add up to the nearly 2,000 people registered here. If you don't choose a theme, you aren't counted here.

The default is OOSpecial, so most people see the board that way.

Admiral Piett - 9
Adventure Media - 14
Dayton Special - 2
OO Alternate - 4
OO Special - 148
Tangerine Dream - 0
True Blue - 3
White Out - 3
Windows XP Blue - 14
Windows XP Silver - 14
Winter Wind - 20
XHalloween - 16
xmb gray - 20
xmb1 - 6
xmb1b - 3
xm2 - 1
xmb2b - 1
xmb3 - 2
xmb3b - 4
xmb4 - 7
XMBForum.com - 4
XP-Blue - 38

I am one of the xmbgray people. It seems the easiest on the eyes, and provides good enough contrast.

I like true blue as well. Piett is interesting, but I wouldn't keep it as my default.

I took a crack at it and created a Starbucks theme. Who wants coffee?

That Starbucks one is pretty good 003, nice work. However I am afraid I will remain ever faithful to XHalloween.

I prefer light text on a dark background. I find it easiest on my eyes and I spend a lot (read: too much) of time here and I find it the easiest on my eyes.

The bright ones give me a headache after a while.
