ONLINE ONSLAUGHT
WWE TV Spoilers
September 24, 2003

by Rick Scaia
Exclusive to OnlineOnslaught.com

No Iron Man match upon which to hang the entire 2 hours of SmackDown! this week...  but there's still a Cruiserweight Title match and the promise of a few other good things to help bolster the show.  And you know it'll take something a little above the norm to satisfy the rabid Philly crowd, too...

Here are the results from the past two days worth of WWE TV tapings, as compiled from e-mail reports:

WWE Sunday Night Heat
(Taped Monday, Airs Sunday)

  • Scott Steiner beat Devon Storm
  • Rodney Mack beat Some Guy
  • Rico beat Another Guy
  • Val Venis beat Stevie Richards

WWE Velocity
(Taped Tuesday, Airs Saturday)

  • Billy Kidman beat Nunzio
  • Rhyno squashed Orlando Jordan
  • Sean O'Haire had his way with Devon Storm
  • Sho Funaki and Ultimo Dragon beat Joey Matthews and Some Other Guy in a good match

WWE SmackDown
(Taped Tuesday, Airs Thursday)

  • Opening segment was supposed to be the presentation of the WWE Title to Brock Lesnar...  Vince McMahon (w/ Sable) started the ceremony, but when Lesnar was expected to enter, Kurt Angle showed up, instead.  He got jobbed, he wants a rematch, etc....  but Vince says no, and that Angle will have to earn his rematch.  Angle decided whether or not the title was on the line, he still wanted a piece of Lesnar tonight, and called Lesnar out.  But instead of Lesnar, John Cena came out, and immediately cut a rap on Angle for losing last week.  That led to Angle and Cena brawling, with Angle getting the better of it.  Then, since Lesnar was not coming out, Angle stormed backstage to find him.  But Lesnar's locker room was empty.  As Angle left Lesnar's locker room, he was blindsided by Cena.  Cena bolted, and Angle was left lying.  When Angle came to, he tried to chase Cena down, but Cena left the building in his car.  So Angle commandeered a limo, and followed him that way.
  • Los Guerreros defeated Matt Hardy and Shannon Moore to retain the tag titles.  Very good match that saw Eddie pin Shannon for the win.  After the match, Hardy, Moore, and Charlie Haas executed a three-on-two beat down, focusing on Eddie, who had agreed to also defend the US Title later in the night (against Haas).
  • A-Train came out and cut a promo whining about how he's sick of being taunted because of his 4-match losing streak to Chris Benoit.  He says he'll snap that streak by beating the hell out of anyone in the building who has the guts to come to the ring.  When no one comes forth, A-Train beats on the timekeeper for a little bit, until Benoit makes the save.  They brawl for a bit, with A-Train winning the confrontation: he left Benoit laying after a chairshot.
  • All Backstage Stuff:  a trainer told Eddie he shouldn't wrestle again tonight, but Eddie refused to listen...  Vince said he'd do a big Title Presentation Ceremony for Lesnar later tonight, no matter what...  and Charlie Haas did a promo acknowleding that Benjamin would be out for a few weeks, and also promising to take Eddie's US Title.
  • Tajiri defeated Rey Mysterio to win the Cruiserweight Title.  Outstanding 15 minute match that saw Tajiri bust out both the green and the red mists to score the tainted victory.  A no brainer for Match of the Week sayeth one eye witness account.
  • With Billy Gunn out injured, Jamie Noble announced that he used some of his inheritence to buy himself a temporary partner: Bradshaw.  Together, they beat the Bashams, but via DQ.  Shaniqua interfered and attacked Bradshaw to cause the DQ.
  • Big Show beat two chumps in a handicap match.  After he was done, he went over and had a few words with Tazz and Cole.  While Show was chatting, Eddie Guerrero made his entrance for his US Title match, and Show took exception to that: Show tossed Eddie into the ringpost before finally taking off.
  • Eddie Guerrero still managed to beat Charlie Haas to retain the US Title. Haas controlled most of the match, targeting Eddie's back after Show's attack.  Finish had Haas' attempt to use the US belt as a weapon backfire, opening the door for Eddie to hit the Frog Splash and get the win.  Good match.
  • Main Event Promo:  the Title Presentation Ceremony.  This time, things went off a bit more smoothly.  At least, up to a point.  Lesnar got handed the belt and Vince put him over as unstoppable.  But that's when Undertaker showed up, and announced that he can take down Brock, and that he'll prove it at No Mercy in four weeks on PPV.  Vince gets upset, and says he's made no such match, but that's when Stephanie shows up and announces that SHE made the match.  Vince tries to intimidate her into backing down and changing the match, but Steph won't do it.  They go back and forth, and eventually, Vince decides that at No Mercy, he'll also wrestle his daughter, and it'll be an "I Quit" match (with the implication being that if Steph quits in the match, she quits as GM, apparently; but reports were not unanimous on that count).

Seems like SD! ramped up the storytelling, but that's to be expected as they've now got a PPV on the horizon.  Lesnar/Taker and Vince/Steph are locks, with the former being quite promising after Taker's last few outings.  If we don't also get Angle/Cena, I'd be shocked, and I think that could be a show-stealer.  Rey/Tajiri in a rematch is likely on PPV.  And if they keep doing a gimmick where Eddie has to wrestle twice on shows to defend both titles, that could be awesome (Guerreros vs. Haas/Benjamin, and Eddie vs. Hardy maybe?).  I'll take a main event promo when the directions we're heading are this promising.

They also left in quality wrestling, though, with (apparently) the hands-down Match of the Week, and two other solid contests featuring Eddie.  We'll have to see how it plays out in its as-aired version...  or if you can't do that, at least come on back Friday for full results and analysis of SmackDown!...
