OO vs. WL: PPV PREDICTIONS WARFARE!
WWE Royal Rumble 2005
January 31, 2005

by PyroFalkon
Independent Auditor for OnlineOnslaught.com and WrestleLine.com

Okay, so I lied. I ended up buying Royal Rumble. My best friend said that the Rumble is his favorite wrestling event, and Rick Scaia did a good job pumping me up for it. So I thought, what the hell, taxes can wait. This is wrestling, damnit!

And you know, it was no Wrestlemania 20, but it was no Great American Bash either. A great PPV with pizza, friends, and the Undertaker finally winning a match on a PPV that I actually watched. Plus, I went 4 for 5! My unspoken new year’s resolution of doing better in the Team Coverage game seems to be working. We also can’t discount Rick Scaia and Denny Burkholder, who

finally prove that they actually deserve to be running their respective websites! Matt Hocking for OO did perfectly too!

That’s the good news. The bad news: Online Onslaught got beat. No no, that’s too weak… we got OWNED. Bad. FOUR of WrestleLine’s nine writers went perfect. And they totally, totally beat the shit out of us for team scores.

But before we get to specifics, let me describe the scoring system. Our contests are based on two criteria: points and percentage. The percentage is pure, with no bonuses or anything. With points, each match is given a certain point value depending on its place on the card; the first match is worth one point, the second worth two, and so on. I’m also keeping track of how well we do when guessing the main events specifically, but I won’t be posting those until a couple more PPVs are done.

So, here’s how the points were divvied up for Royal Rumble 2005:

1 point: Edge over Shawn Michaels
2 points: Undertaker over Heidenreich
3 points: JBL wins the triple threat match (SmackDown! main event)
4 points: Triple H over Randy Orton (RAW main event)
5 points: Batista wins the Royal Rumble (joint main event)

The point and percentage winners are a six-way tie. Rick Scaia and Matt Hocking from Online Onslaught went 5 for 5 and scored 15 points. I want to note right here that if I had chosen Triple H to go over Orton, I would have been perfect too. I just figured that Orton winning would piss me off, and considering the Byte This! experience he subjected me to last week, it would be a perfect cap to my week. This time, I finally have a reason to cheer for Orton, and he lets me down. I hate Orton so very, very much.

Anyway, on the WrestleLine side, Denny Burkholder, Daniel Fitch, Jonathan Leung, and Ryan Deppa all also went perfect. Of note, this is Deppa’s second consecutive perfect PPV, but it’s Leung’s THIRD consecutive perfect PPV. Had I not been so infuriated by the fact that you all beat the shit out of us, I’d congratulate you.

The last place guys for percentage are both housed by OO. The Cubs Fan and Big Danny T each went 1-4 (.200), scoring 3 and 4 points respectively. No one in WL went worse than .800 or fewer than 10 points. In fact, only two (Sean Swift and Scott Hardie) scored less than 13 out of the possible 15.

Twelve writers got all three main events right, and four others got two of the three right. Everyone else got one main event right.

WrestleLine trashed Online Onslaught in both the percentage and point battles, going 40-5 (.889) and scoring 13.4 PPW. OO went 33-17 (.660) and 10.3 PPW. As I said, owned. Overall, we went 73-22 (.768) and 11.9 PPW. Nineteen writers total participated.

Here are the complete standings from Royal Rumble and the year. Online Onslaught writers are in red, WrestleLine writers are in blue.
