OO BATTLE OF THE BRANDS
RAW vs. SmackDown!:  Who Wins?

Week Ending April 30, 2004

Featuring Many Current and Past OO Columnists
Ratings Compiled by Rick Scaia

OOficial Brand of the Week:
RAW

RAW:
3.63  --/-- SD!: 2.57

RATING SYSTEM: Rather than go with the standard 1-10 integer scale for rating shows, OO has selected a 0.0-5.0 rating scheme.  Not only does this allow the reviewer to more precisely award points, but more importantly, it is our belief that our ratings will, in a way, be comparable to the weekly Nielsen Ratings.  Our ratings are based on show quality, however, whereas Nielsen's are based on eyeballs.  Just as WWE hasn't reached the real world 5.0 mark in a long, long time, it will take a monumental effort for a show to earn the highest OO World ratings...  but piss us off in a given week, and we'll be rating you like you're Nitro and it's 2001.

RAW (4/26/04) vs. SMACKDOWN! (4/29/04)
OOFICIAL RATINGS

Canadian Bulldog
RAW: 3.5
The good: In the story of the year, Triple H continues giving the rub to those who deserve it. His reaction to Tajiri's misting was probably the most dramatic since Nidia's (although... I would bet good money he won't be hobbling to ringside for months on end as a result). The HHH-Tajiri match was solid as well. And HHH winning via pedigree was the right way to end it as well.  Could I be becoming a HHH fan again?.... The Kane-Matt Hardy stuff made a little more sense this week, and its not a bad direction to go in for either guy.... The main event was terrific, though it almost seems like that's a foregone conclusion on Raw these days. I am very much looking forward to next week's Michaels-Benoit match (it SHOULD be on PPV, though), so I just hope that FUCKING HOCKEY doesn't get in the way again.

The bad: FUCKING HOCKEY!!! I don't like hockey in the least (which should mean I have to renounce my citizenship, I know), and for the second or third week now, Raw has been pre-empted here in Canada for hours and hours of playoff hockey. I know its a ratings thing, but watching Raw at midnight till 2 a.m. is not always an enjoyable experience (and videotaping for later viewing, after you've read the results online, isn't any better). There used to be a time in Canada, I'm thinking from 95-97, where that was the ONLY time you could watch Raw, in the wee hours of the morning. But it just detracts from the whole experience, for me anyways.... Does the NHL real it cost Raw at least 0.5 points in my rating? DO THEY?  Other than that, not much. Eugene is getting a little overexposed these days; show could use more Trish, etc.

SmackDown!: 2.5
The good: I enjoy where they're going with Rico and Haas. I don't enjoy the RIDICULOUS amount of gay-bashing. Yes, I realize this is professional wrestling, but I think Doug Basham violently running away from Rico blowing kisses at him is a LITTLE TOO MUCH! I will say, though, Haas' facial expressions are priceless.... I like that they're giving Booker T a nice spot on SmackDown, and his feud with Undertaker is taking shape nicely. Eddie Guerrero Vs. Bubba Ray Dudley was alright.

The bad: Did these people not read my comments last week? The show does not need Kurt Angle in an authority figure, even with Matt Morgan's twin brother wheeling him around. Let Angle work as a manager, commentator or whatever during his injury if he wants to stay on TV. Give Paul Heyman the job! Seriously! Is it that hard to understand? He's fine as an adviser to "The Dudley"; but him dictating the entire pace of the show, either for real or on-camera, is what makes the show good.... Torrie Vs. Rene Dupree -- even though I was expecting a five star classic to begin with -- was just awful.... Nothing on the show was nearly as strong as it was last week. Oh, and.. FUCKING HOCKEY!!!

Bulldog's battle-to-date averages: RAW (3.2), SD! (2.9).

Adam Gutschmidt

RAW: 3.7
Raw gets a lower score from me than what I've been giving it recently, but it's not because the show was worse this week.  It simply gets a few notches taken off because nothing of significance happened this week.  As Rick said, a placeholder show to whet our appetite for next week.  The main event tag was just another solid outing of great formulaic tag team wrestling.  HHH gave Tajiri way more action than I thought he would and provided another excellent TV match.  Eugene continues to be funny and not offensive so I give the WWE props for that.  The only complaints I have about RAW is that I don't like where the Kane/Matt Hardy stuff is going.  It seems to be leading to the return of Hankie Boy which is NOT a good thing at all.  And speaking of returns, I'm already sick of Grandmaster Sexay and he needs to visit the Canadian border real soon.

SmackDown!: 1.9
Oy vey!  How can this show continue to stink so much.  Thankfully, JBL was kept to a minimum but that still really didn't help matters.  I think it was too soon to bring Kurt back given the original segment that prompted his absence.  I also don't like this bitter character he has now.  The Cene/Dupree feud wouldn't bother me so much if it didn't have Torrie as a figure in it.  Cena should not be playing the "knight in shining armor" routine.  The Haas/Rico stuff is SO unfunny and could only be paid off if Hass just snaps and destroys Rico real soon.  Heyman claims that the Dudleys aren't corporate monkeys anymore yet they still wear the corporate merchandise and use the same stale moves.  I need more convincing.  And finally, I've noticed that now that the show has started to suck, Cole has once again become annoying.  When Smackdown was good, anytime he would gush over anything, it usually deserved it.  His hyperbolic shilling at the end of the show of that lame tag match and the Undertaker "in action" almost made me want to throw up.

Adam's battle-to-date averages: RAW (3.7), SD! (3.2).

Rick Scaia
RAW: 3.7
No denying RAW was in maintenance mode this week.  But you still got a very good main event tag title match, a slightly off-kilter (in a good way) Crash TV pacing to the show that made it feel like things were a bit less predictable/stagnant than they really were, and a big finish that really set the stage for the following week, where Michaels and Benoit will headline what I'm calling a "Free Per View" show.  A solid, but unspectacular week.

SmackDown!: 3.3
A week after getting off life support, SD! ALMOST giving us reasons to get excited about tuning in.  No Bradshaw was a start.  The returns of Taker (really well done) and Angle (a bit cheesy and strained, but necessary) helped.  Add in a very good main event match and actually announcing two big matches for next week (Eddie/RVD vs. Duds and Taker in action), and you've got as good a show as SD!'s delivered since Mania.  Just about on par with the Heyman-flavored show the week before, maybe even a smidge better.  There is work yet to be done here, but this makes two weeks in a row that SD! was not a chore.  I'll take it.

Rick's battle-to-date averages: RAW (3.4), SD! (3.6).
