2002 YEAR IN REVIEW
The Onslaught Tradition Continues...
January 6, 2003

by Rick Scaia
OnlineOnslaught.com

Every year, Online Onslaught has tried to compile a complete reference document, combining everything from backstage rumor, to mark-ish elements like storylines and title changes, to "meta-wrestling" memories like OO's funniest, most prescient, or outright dumbest quotes of the year...  and 2002 will be no different than any other year since 1996.

As always, I'm trying to top myself again...  the scope of the YiR will be about the same as last year, but the format for the individual months has been tweaked up and expanded a bit.  I hope, as you go through the year in chronological fashion, you find the changes to your liking.

Enjoy!

An Overview

2002: The Curse of Monopoly?
An introduction to and overview of the Year That Was, complete with the now-traditional listing of year-starting and year-ending champions with stats for all titles, a summary of the best wrestlers of 2002 according to the Weekly OO Honor Roll, and a rundown of ratings trends.  Plus: a few editorial thoughts on the WWE's first year of wrestling monopoly.

Month-by-Month Details

January, 2002
Triple H returns from a serious injury, rumors abound about big name veterans returning to the WWF.

February, 2002
The nWo -- Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, and Scott Hall -- invade the WWF... but the results are disappointing.

March, 2002
Hulk Hogan proves he just might deserve that "Babe Ruth of Pro Wrestling" label when he's the highlight of WrestleMania 18.

April, 2002
The pro wrestling version of Asexual Reproduction leads to the WWF artificially splitting into two brands:  RAW vs. SmackDown!.

May, 2002
The World Wrestling Federation becomes World Wrestling Entertainment, all while ratings tumble...

June, 2002
Stone Cold Steve Austin walks out on his company and is charged with beating his wife Debra.

July, 2002
It was 2002's most surreal moment, as Eric Bischoff appeared on RAW to help launch the General Manager Era.

August, 2002
Project Lesnar reached full bloom after just four months, as Lesnar destroyed Hulk Hogan and took the Undisputed Title from the Rock.

September, 2002
The two WWE brands made their distinctions crystal clear, as SmackDown! embarked upon a remarkable wrestling renaissance.

October, 2002
One of the lows of the wrestling year saw Triple H accuse Kane of being a corpse-raping, bad-driving murderer.

November, 2002
Survivor Series shocked us again, as both Shawn Michaels and the Big Show walked out as unlikely champions.

December, 2002
Wild rumors started in December about secret meetings between Bret Hart and WWE... and what's that about Goldberg and the Rock?

Opinion and Memories

OO's Honor Roll
Online Onslaught's own picks for the best and worst of 2002 in over 40 categories.

Mark Coale's Year in Review
Not every fan is limited to the domestic/WWE/TNA products... and with plenty of lucha and puroresu viewing under his belt, Mark casts a wider net when he tries to decide the absolute best things he saw in the world of wrestling in 2002.

The NWA-TNA Year in Review
Scotty Szanto-Nicodemus has reviewed ALL the footage, and has the best and worst from 26 episodes' worth of 2002's only other nationally-available weekly wrestling promotion.

The 2002 Lucha Review
The Cubs Fan doesn't just watch and recap domestic wrestling.  He's also a lucha fanatic, and for those of you interested in who really shined south of the border in 2002, he's compiled this list of CMLL's top performers of the year.
